Wireless Home Security Systems
Installation Guide
One of the great benefits of purchasing a wireless home security system is that you do not generally need to pay for someone to install the system , drill cable holes etc.. You can do it yourself!
A simple step by step installation guide is shown below :
1) Always read the manufacturers instructions
Before trying to install the system yourself as some systems may need tweaking or customising to get the most reliable reliables. Other systems may also recommend these steps in a different order!
Most manufacturers also provide a dedicated helpline if you have problems during the installation.
2) Check all the items are in the box
Please do not throw away or damage any packaging, items or instructions from the box until you know the alarm system etc is working correctly. I've done this many times in my mad rush to get something working and this doesn't help when returning the item to the manufacturer.
3) Assess the layout of your property
You will need to decide where the main control panel wil be situated and door, window and motion sensors. Placement of the control panel is extremely important as it should not be where an intruder could damage it or turn if off, or where its too hidden so you won't hear the alarm or easily de-activate.
5) Install the control panel
Remember most wireless systems are not completely wireless! You will usually have a wire/cable to connect the contol panel to the electrical socket.
Most wireless security systems usually come with a battery backup incase the power is interrupted or the device is unplugged.
6) Install the siren and program the control panel
The siren should generally be near an electrical outlet. If you are ensure on what you are doing then please do not proceed. Contact an Electrician!
In order to program your sirens, you will usually need to use a common screwdriver. However, you must refer to the manufacturers instructions as all systems vary.
Control panel programming should be performed using the manufacturers instructions.
7) Install the sensors
Sensors are normally required on windows and doorways to detect potential intruders and movement. Most sensors are plastic and can be installed with a screwdriver.
Do not worry about these being visible - as that is a good preventative measure and may prevent any windows or doors being broken.
8) Test the alarm
It is critical that you follow the manufacturers instructions to test all the features of the wireless security system before using the product for real.
9) Change the default password
Most wireless security systems come with a default preset password e.g. 0000 or 1234. You MUST change this password to something unique and memorable and do not write the password down where easily visible!
Good luck and be safe !
I hope this has helped you feel more confident about installing a wireless home security system.
