The Top Ten Burglar Alarms Myths Exposed !
The real truth about alarm systems is here!
1. A Burglar alarm shows there are valuables in the property
Statistically, a home with an alarm system is three times less likely to be burgled than a home without an alarm. Burglar alarms should be considered more as a deterrent than an invitations to an intruder.
2. My house won't be a target for burglars
Most burglars are opportunist thieves who choose their targets impromptu. It is better to be safe than sorry. Chances are if they see some form of security they will move to the next property without an alarm system (similar to car theives).
Unless you live in a remote area, every home is a target for the opportunist burglar.
3. A Burglar alarm will not stop a determined burglar
A visible burglar alarm may not stop a determined intruder from choosing your property, but it will certainly not make the burglarly easier for the intruder by alerting the home owner, neighbours or other contacts of the intrusion.
It may also help shorten the amount of time the burglar spends searching your home for stealable items.
4. Burglar alarms are expensive
Simple D.I.Y. alarms can cost much less than £100 to buy and can be installed yourself or you could purchase a feature rich professional burglar alarm which can cost from £300 and upwards to buy and install.
5. Burglar alarms must be professionally installed
Installation of most D.I.Y. alarms can be done by anyone with basic “do it yourself” skills.
However, professional burglar alarms systems should ideally be installed by an electronic system engineer or approved alarm installer.
6. Burglar alarms will annoy the neighbours
Most people ignore the ringing of an alarm bell because of their history of false activations. These are particularly so with the D.I.Y. alarm systems and car alarms!
7. My pets or children can cause false alarms
Most wireless DIY and professional alarms, motion sensors and alarm kits provide perimeter detectors and pet-friendly motion sensors.
The motion sensors are easily or can be placed in areas that will no be falsely triggered.
8. Burglar alarms must have a maintenance contract
Many insurance companies do request that burglar alarm owners should enlist the services of an approved specialist to perform at least an annual service of their alarm system.
However, most alarm systems, motion detectors and DIY install kits can be installed without a maintenance contract and will continue to work perfectly well.
9. Police don’t respond to burglar alarms
In the UK, Police may not respond to “bells only alarms” unless there is additional evidence of a crime taking place at the address.
However, Police would response to monitored burglar alarms which have been allocated Unique Reference Numbers (URN) in accordance with ACPO Policy Documents DD243:2004
10. Wireless burglar alarms are unreliable
Wireless technology has moved on incredibly over the last 10 years to the extent that wireless alarms are as increasingly reliable as their wired counterparts. Insurance companies are also increasingly accepting wireless alarms for home security.
Hope this helps!!!!
